JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said global investors continue to have a positive view of India as a destination for long-term investment. However, he said the inconsistent application of tax rules remains a concern for several companies. According to Dimon, businesses have approached him with complaints that they sometimes end up paying higher taxes on deals in India than they had expected. He also pointed to steps taken by the government to address some concerns of foreign investors, including changes relating to taxation and access to government securities.
Dimon also said foreign companies can face difficulties competing in the Indian market, which, in his view, can affect the flow of foreign direct investment. He stressed that greater competition could benefit the Indian economy and said regulatory barriers should not unnecessarily restrict foreign businesses. Despite these concerns, Dimon said India has strong economic prospects, while JPMorgan's latest research also continues to highlight the country's importance to global investors.
