AI company Anthropic has agreed to a $1.5 billion (around ₹14,400 crore) settlement in one of the biggest copyright disputes in AI history. The case alleged that the company used copyrighted books without permission to train its AI models. The settlement covers more than 14,000 books published by Bloomsbury, including works by J.K. Rowling, Sarah J. Maas, and Susanna Clarke.
Under the settlement, eligible books will receive an average compensation of $3,000 each, with the remaining amount shared equally between publishers and authors after legal expenses. The ruling is considered a landmark in AI copyright law and is expected to influence similar legal cases involving AI companies such as OpenAI and Meta.
