To address the growing shortage of employment opportunities in the country, leading industrialists have come forward with a major initiative titled “100 Million Jobs.” The programme aims to create 100 million new jobs over the next ten years. It has been conceptualised by NASSCOM co-founder Harish Mehta, TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) founder A.J. Patel, and CIPP founder K. Yatheesh Rajawat.
Currently, around 12 million people enter the job market every year, but only about half of them are able to secure employment. Experts state that to effectively reduce unemployment, the economy must generate at least 8–9 million jobs annually. A mismatch between industry-required skills and the available workforce has also been a key contributor to the employment gap.
Key objectives of the programme include:
Providing employability skill training.
Promoting job-centric economic development.
Identifying employment-generating industries across regions and sectors.
Encouraging small industries and startups with high job-creation potential.
Expanding industries beyond major cities.
Removing institutional barriers to job creation and strengthening collaboration between the government, industry and society.
