The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has introduced the Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) to help protect people from losing money to cybercriminals. The system was launched on May 22 last year and has reportedly played a key role in identifying and preventing suspicious financial transactions.
According to the information provided, the FRI system has blocked suspicious transactions worth ₹5,043.73 crore over a period of 15 months. Between April and August 2026 alone, it prevented more than ₹2,000 crore from being transferred to cybercriminals. Developed through the DoT’s Digital Intelligence Platform, the system alerts users when they attempt to transfer money to suspicious mobile numbers and can either warn them or stop the transaction. The alert gives users an opportunity to reconsider the payment before proceeding.
