Meta has clarified several concerns surrounding WhatsApp's upcoming Username feature after discussions emerged over possible cyber fraud risks. The company stated that creating a username will be completely optional, allowing users to choose whether or not to set one. It also confirmed that usernames already associated with Facebook, Instagram, verified accounts, government organizations, and public figures will remain protected and cannot be claimed by others.
Meta further clarified that users cannot send messages simply by knowing someone's username. The platform will not offer a direct username search feature, and additional security measures, including a unique "Username Key," will help enhance user privacy. New messages from unknown users will display warning information, including the sender's country. Meta also confirmed that usernames can be changed in the future, while reserving celebrity or verified usernames in advance will not be permitted. The feature is expected to roll out later this year after user feedback is reviewed.
