NASA’s Artemis II spacecraft lifted off with four astronauts, carrying decades of engineering expertise and advanced imaging technology. For the first time, NASA approved the use of personal smartphones on a crewed lunar mission, allowing the astronauts to bring four iPhone 17 Pro Max units aboard. These devices captured striking photos of astronauts Reid Wiseman and Christina Koch aboard the Orion spacecraft, including Earth viewed from the cabin windows.
Approving smartphones for spaceflight involved a rigorous four phase safety protocol. The hardware underwent safety reviews, hazard identification, mitigation strategies, and final validation. NASA examined factors such as durability, battery stability, heat dissipation, and device behavior in microgravity. The iPhone 17 Pro Max, featuring Apple’s Ceramic Shield 2, met these demanding requirements, enabling its official use for documenting the mission.
While traditional equipment like Nikon D5, Nikon Z9, and GoPro HERO4 Black remain essential for high-resolution scientific imagery, iPhones offer an accessible perspective. They complement professional tools by capturing everyday snapshots from the astronauts’ point of view, providing humanity a unique look at life aboard a spacecraft on its journey to the Moon.
