India must develop its own DeepSeek-like artificial intelligence model to stay competitive in next-generation technology and maintain global relevance, brokerage firm Bernstein stated in a report. It warned that without indigenous AI capabilities, India would remain dependent on US or Chinese AI models, exposing the country to significant geopolitical risks. The report highlighted that recent US restrictions on access to advanced AI models mark a major turning point in the global AI race.
Bernstein further noted that advanced large language models (LLMs) are increasingly being treated by nations as strategic assets rather than commercial software products. It cautioned that relying on foreign AI models while focusing only on application development could lead India to lose control over future technological ecosystems. The report compared AI systems to “next-generation fighter jets,” emphasizing that governments are now protecting foundational models as critical national security and economic assets.
