Microsoft Distinguished Engineer Galen Hunt recently posted about a new engineering role focused on building technology to help migrate Microsoft’s large codebases from C++ to Rust. He mentioned combining AI and algorithms for rewriting major codebases, which led many publications to report that Microsoft plans to rewrite Windows using AI by 2030.
These reports created concern because moving from C++ to Rust is a significant shift, and the idea of AI-generated code raised fears about software reliability and possible job cuts.
However, Hunt later clarified that these interpretations were incorrect. He stated clearly that Windows is not being rewritten in Rust using AI. Instead, he is working on a long-term research project aimed at developing tools that can enable migration between programming languages. His post was meant to attract engineers to this research effort, not to announce any new Windows strategy or confirm Rust as a final destination.
