Amazon is reportedly exploring ways to make its warehouses more automated, potentially reducing the need to hire a large number of workers in the US. According to internal reports, the e-commerce giant may rely more on robotics and AI-driven machines to handle tasks such as picking, packing, and delivery. If the plans materialize, Amazon could avoid hiring around 600,000 workers in the US by 2033. Current strategies suggest the company could already reduce hiring by over 160,000 employees by 2027. The move is expected to improve efficiency and cut costs per item handled in the warehouse.Documents viewed by the New York Times also indicate that Amazon’s robotics division is aiming to upgrade warehouse systems to automate up to 75% of operations. While it’s not clear whether current employees will be laid off, the shift signals a major transformation in how Amazon manages its workforce.
Anticipating public concern over automation, the company is reportedly encouraging executives to use softer terms like “advanced technology” or “cobots” instead of words like AI or robots. The approach aims to show collaboration between humans and machines rather than replacement. An Amazon spokesperson clarified that these documents reflect the views of one team and emphasized that the company is also planning to hire around 250,000 workers in the US for the upcoming holiday season.
