Former Zimbabwe captain Sean Williams has brought an abrupt end to his international cricket career after entering a rehabilitation program for drug addiction, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) confirmed on Tuesday.
Williams, one of Zimbabwe’s most experienced players, made himself unavailable for national selection and will not be considered for future matches. The decision came after an internal inquiry by ZC following his withdrawal from the T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier in September.
During the investigation, Williams revealed that he had been struggling with substance abuse and had voluntarily sought professional help. In an official statement, ZC said, “After careful consideration, Zimbabwe Cricket has concluded that Williams will no longer be considered for national selection.”
Williams’ exit marks a sad end to a remarkable career that spanned over a decade, during which he played crucial roles in both Tests and limited-overs cricket for Zimbabwe.
