Cristiano Ronaldo has dismissed speculation surrounding his retirement, stating that he will not make any hasty decisions during an ongoing tournament. Speaking after Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Croatia, Ronaldo said his complete focus remains on the FIFA World Cup and that he will decide on his future only after Portugal’s campaign comes to an end. He also rejected recent comments made by his sister regarding his retirement, emphasizing that such an important decision would only be made after careful consideration. Ronaldo further expressed heartfelt admiration for Croatia captain Luka Modrić, calling him a true legend and saying it was always a pleasure to share the field with his former Real Madrid teammate.
Ronaldo also etched his name into the record books by becoming the oldest player to score in a FIFA World Cup knockout match at the age of 41 years and 147 days. The goal also marked his first-ever strike in a World Cup knockout fixture despite playing in a record sixth World Cup. He was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance. Croatia initially took the lead through Ivan Perišić, but Ronaldo equalized from the penalty spot after a VAR review. In stoppage time, substitute Gonçalo Ramos scored the winning goal to seal Portugal’s 2-1 victory. Portugal will now face Spain in the Round of 16.
