India’s Test squad for the upcoming two-match home series against the West Indies was announced on Thursday, with the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee making some notable changes. Devdutt Padikkal, who had been on the fringes of the red-ball setup, has earned a recall, while Nitish Reddy has also been included after impressing in domestic cricket. On the flip side, Karun Nair, Sarfaraz Khan, and Manav Suthar failed to make the cut, raising eyebrows among fans and pundits alike.
Agarkar explained that the decision to drop Karun Nair came after his lackluster performances in the recent England series. “We expected more from Karun Nair. It can’t just be one innings. Padikkal offers more balance at the top,” he stated. Another key announcement was the appointment of Ravindra Jadeja as vice-captain, with Shubman Gill continuing as captain. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah remains a vital part of the squad, reaffirming his commitment to Test cricket.
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan shared his thoughts on the squad, suggesting that Kuldeep Yadav might once again struggle to find a place in the playing XI despite being named in the 15. Pathan argued that the presence of Axar Patel, along with Jadeja and Washington Sundar, offers the team additional batting depth, which could push Kuldeep out of contention in home conditions where only two fast bowlers are typically fielded.
Pathan further voiced concern that no young fast bowler had been given a chance in the squad. “It seemed like a missed opportunity not to play a young fast bowler in these two Tests. If I were a selector, I would surely have tried to blood a youngster, focusing on long-term development rather than immediate results,” he said.
Journalist Sandip G also noted that the selection was more about stability than experimentation. With the Gill-led side managing to square the series in England recently, the selectors saw little need for sweeping changes. “There were no late curveballs or googlies from the panel. A tweak here, a twist there, sufficed,” Sandip wrote.
Overall, the squad reflects a balance of experience and youth, but the omissions of Nair and Sarfaraz are bound to keep discussions alive until the series kicks off.
