Vijay will have to wait longer to form the government in Tamil Nadu, as his swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Thursday has been postponed due to a lack of majority support. While TVK secured 108 seats in the Assembly elections, Vijay’s victory from two constituencies effectively reduces the party’s voting strength to 107, leaving it short of the 118-member majority mark required to form the government. So far, only the Indian National Congress has officially extended support with its five MLAs. Although parties like VCK and CPI have responded positively, they are yet to make formal announcements. Meanwhile, Edappadi K. Palaniswami-led AIADMK has clearly ruled out support to TVK, forcing Vijay’s party to intensify efforts to gather additional backing from smaller parties and independent legislators.
Sources said Rajendra Arlekar sought a complete list of supporting MLAs before inviting Vijay to form the government. Since TVK could not immediately provide the required numbers, the Governor reportedly withheld a decision on the oath-taking ceremony. Vijay met the Governor on Wednesday along with senior party leaders and formally submitted a letter staking claim to form the government. Congress leaders also indicated that Rahul Gandhi may attend the swearing-in ceremony whenever it takes place. The Congress, while extending support, insisted that “communal forces” should not be part of the alliance, indirectly targeting the BJP. TVK is now trying to secure support from VCK, CPI, PMK, and AMMK legislators, but negotiations remain inconclusive.
