The Tamil Nadu government has announced good news for domestic electricity consumers by expanding its free power scheme. The new decision, which will come into effect from the next billing cycle, is expected to reduce electricity bills to zero for more than one crore families across the state. This is considered the first major welfare decision taken after C. Joseph Vijay assumed office as Chief Minister, and it is expected to provide significant relief to lakhs of households.
To implement the scheme, Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) is upgrading its billing software. According to the corporation’s accounts department, the software has been updated to identify eligible consumers, calculate subsidies, and issue revised bills under the new policy. Senior officials have also instructed field staff to ensure that eligible consumers receive the benefits without any delay.
Under the revised policy, domestic consumers who use less than 500 units of electricity over a two-month billing cycle will receive up to 200 units free of cost. Tamil Nadu currently has around 2.46 crore domestic electricity connections. Until now, around 67 lakh families consuming below 100 units were receiving zero electricity bills. With the latest expansion, this number is expected to rise sharply to 1.2 crore families.
Additionally, around 85.83 lakh consumers are likely to see their electricity bills reduced by nearly ₹235 every two months. However, the existing benefit of 100 free units will continue for the 34.24 lakh consumers who use more than 500 units.
Officials clarified that the state government will bear the additional financial burden caused by the expanded scheme. Following the government’s announcement on May 10, the software upgrade process was immediately initiated. The government stated that the welfare measure aims to reduce financial pressure on ordinary and middle-class families.
