Rich BJP MLA Turn Into a Beggar in Mumbai?

Maharashtra BJP MLA Parag Shah, known as one of the wealthiest legislators in the state, recently caught public attention after videos of him begging on the streets of Mumbai went viral on social media. Shah, who represents the Ghatkopar East constituency and is also a businessman, reportedly has assets worth more than ₹3,300 crore. His appearance as a beggar left many people surprised and triggered questions about why a wealthy politician had taken to the streets seeking alms.

The reason, however, was linked to a spiritual practice rather than financial hardship. Following the advice of his spiritual guru, Shah undertook a day-long religious observance associated with a special month in the Jain tradition. Disguised so that people would not recognise him, he walked through the streets of his constituency, accepted whatever food was offered to him and slept on the roadside. Shah said the experience gave him a different perspective on life. He also noted that while people treat him with respect when he visits them as an MLA, the same people appeared superior to him when he approached them as a beggar. According to Shah, the experience also helped him understand the generosity and compassion of Mumbai’s people.
