The Supreme Court once again heard petitions filed by Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and former MLA Sandra Venkata Veeraiah in the 2015 cash-for-vote case. Revanth Reddy sought quashing of the ACB case registered against him, while senior advocate Siddharth Luthra appeared on his behalf. Luthra argued that the provisions introduced through the 2018 amendment to the Prevention of Corruption Act could not be applied retrospectively to an incident that allegedly took place in 2015. He also raised issues concerning the registration of the FIR and general diary.
During the hearing, the bench observed that voting is a legal right and indicated that the applicability of the Prevention of Corruption Act would have to be examined when an attempt is made to influence that right. Revanth Reddy’s arguments have concluded, and the court is expected to hear arguments from the BRS side in the next hearing. Senior advocate Aryama Sundaram is set to represent BRS, while the next date of hearing is to be fixed by the Supreme Court registry.
