For the first time in Hyderabad’s key assembly constituency, Jubilee Hills, a record 58 candidates are contesting in the ongoing by-election. Most of these candidates are independents. Initially, 211 nominations were submitted before the deadline. During scrutiny the following day, election officials verified 81 nominations.
With such a large number of candidates, major parties like BRS, BJP, and Congress faced intense competition. Senior leaders intervened, convincing independent candidates to withdraw their nominations in favor of party nominees, leading to the current tally of 58 candidates in the fray.
Election officials confirmed that this is the highest number of contestants since Jubilee Hills constituency was formed in 2009. For context, 13 candidates contested in 2009, and 21 contested in 2014. In the 2014 elections, Maganti Gopinath of the TDP emerged victorious.
While the main battle is expected between BJP, BRS, and Congress, several independents, student leaders, and farmers also entered the fray. Some farmers withdrew their nominations, but student representatives remained, keeping the total at 58. Independents are actively campaigning, highlighting alleged lapses of the previous BRS and current Congress governments.
Voter Update: The Election Commission recently released the final voter list, showing 4,01,365 registered voters in Jubilee Hills—2,08,561 men and 1,92,779 women. Following the by-election notification, 2,383 new voters have been added. Polling is scheduled on November 11 from 8 AM to 5 PM.
