A political controversy has erupted after US President Donald Trump claimed in an interview with Italian media outlet “La7” that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had requested a photograph with him at the G7 summit in France and that he agreed to it. His remarks triggered strong reactions in Italy, with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani cancelling his scheduled visit to the United States in protest.
Italian leaders across the political spectrum expressed solidarity with Meloni, calling Trump’s statement inappropriate. Meloni responded with a video statement rejecting the claim as entirely false, saying she was surprised by the remarks. She emphasized that neither she nor Italy ever “beg” anyone, and criticized the portrayal as misleading and disrespectful between allied nations.
