The Telangana government has taken a significant step to ensure welfare pensions reach only the deserving beneficiaries. After reports indicated that pensions meant for the poor were being misused, the government ordered a stricter social audit.
The audit revealed that thousands of pensions were being claimed by ineligible individuals. Cases included wealthy persons, beneficiaries below the eligible age of 50, people receiving disability pensions without any disability, and pensions being illegally drawn in the names of deceased persons.
As a pilot project, the government conducted a review in four districts, examining around 20,000 pension cases. Nearly 2,000 beneficiaries were found to be ineligible. Based on these findings, the government is preparing to cancel such pensions.
Officials stated that the project will soon be expanded across all districts to prevent misuse and ensure that welfare benefits reach genuine and eligible citizens.
