The Supreme Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to clearly state whether it intends to continue further investigation in the murder case of former minister Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy. Observing that the agency has been maintaining an ambiguous stand, the apex court said it must now clarify its position so that the court can proceed accordingly. A bench comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and N.K. Singh granted the CBI two weeks to submit its response and posted the matter for further hearing on February 5.
The directions were issued while hearing an interim plea filed by Sunitha Narreddy, daughter of the deceased leader, challenging the December 10 order of the CBI special court. The special court had permitted further investigation only against two accused — Kiran Yadav and Arjun Reddy — while refusing a broader probe into the alleged larger conspiracy. Senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, appearing for Sunitha, argued that crucial aspects including the ₹4-crore money trail and call data records were not thoroughly examined. He questioned how the trial court could conclude that call records would serve no further purpose. The Supreme Court observed that instead of conducting a mini-trial, it would first seek clarity from the CBI on the specific scope of further investigation.
