A severe depression continues over the southwest Bay of Bengal. Although the India Meteorological Department had earlier forecast that it would intensify into a cyclone on Friday, meteorologists said the system did not strengthen due to unfavourable conditions. The system is moving northwestwards and is likely to cross the Sri Lankan coast between Trincomalee and Jaffna by Saturday afternoon, according to IMD estimates.
Due to its influence, the State Disaster Management Authority said light to moderate rainfall is likely at isolated places in Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore, Chittoor, and Tirupati districts on Saturday and Sunday. Light rain may also occur in Bapatla, Palnadu, and Prakasam districts. IMD further stated that parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala could receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during the weekend.
