New York City and parts of the northeastern United States witnessed extreme cold conditions over the weekend, with temperatures dropping sharply on Sunday. In New York, the mercury fell to around 3 degrees Fahrenheit, while strong winds made it feel like minus 14 degrees. In some regions, wind chill values plunged to as low as minus 40 degrees, meteorologists said. Experts attributed the severe cold wave to Arctic air masses moving down from Canada, calling it one of the harshest cold spells in the last 10 to 20 years.
Due to the dangerous weather, severe cold warnings were issued for over 43 million people across major cities such as New York and Philadelphia. Officials reported that at least 17 people have died in New York City so far this year, with 13 deaths linked to hypothermia. In a striking comparison, temperatures at Antarctica’s McMurdo Station were reportedly higher than those recorded in New York during this cold wave.
