A major development has taken place in US politics during the ongoing tensions with Iran. Joe Kent, the US Counterterrorism Chief in the administration of President Donald Trump, resigned from his post on Tuesday. Kent said he could not support the war against Iran and that his conscience did not allow him to back it. He also stated that there is currently no immediate threat from Iran to the United States and therefore the war is unnecessary.
Kent claimed that the United States entered the conflict with Iran due to pressure from Israel. He also noted that Israel has strong lobbying influence in the US. However, Kent clarified that he still supports many of the foreign policy decisions taken by Trump in the past.
In his resignation letter, Kent also offered advice to the president. He said he supports the values Trump spoke about during the 2016, 2020 and 2024 election campaigns. According to Kent, during Trump’s first term the US avoided major wars and focused on eliminating threats like ISIS leaders. But after Trump’s re-election, Iran began to be viewed as a major threat, which eventually led to the current conflict. Kent urged the administration to correct the situation and guide the country toward a safer path.
