Panthic bodies have urged the Punjab government to consult the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) before framing or amending any anti-sacrilege law. During a gathering held in Amritsar, religious leaders and Sikh organisations passed a resolution stating that any law related to sacrilege must reflect the sentiments of the Sikh community and should be drafted only after discussions with the SGPC.
The meeting was convened ahead of the state government’s plan to introduce stricter provisions in the existing law. Leaders emphasised that the proposed legislation must be clear, precise, and aligned with religious values to prevent misuse. While appreciating the government’s initiative to curb sacrilege incidents, they stressed that without community consultation, the law may not be effective.
