In a pioneering move to further strengthen women passengers’ safety and set a powerful example of social empowerment, Hyderabad Metro Rail - one of the country’s most modern urban transit systems has appointed 20 transgender personnel to its security department. Under the Telangana government’s inclusive vision of equality and dignity, these 20 trained transgender security personnel took up their roles on December 1st 2025 at various metro stations.
The newly appointed transgender personnel will handle security measures in general and women-only coaches, supervise scanners, guide passengers, provide information and assistance, and participate in street-level and concourse security. With nearly 5 lakh daily passengers (around 30% women) using the metro, this appointment not only reinforces the safety environment for women travellers but also stands as a strong symbol of transgender empowerment.
