The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has ushered in a new chapter in urban governance through a large-scale administrative reorganisation aimed at delivering better and faster services to citizens. As part of this restructuring, 27 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) have been merged into the GHMC, expanding its jurisdiction from 650 square kilometres to 2,053 square kilometres. With a population of over 13.4 million now under its purview, GHMC has emerged as one of the largest urban local bodies in the country. To bring administration closer to the people, the existing structure of 6 zones and 30 circles has been expanded to 12 zones and 60 circles. Officials stated that this reorganisation will significantly improve the delivery of essential civic services such as sanitation, roads, drainage, street lighting, town planning, and grievance redressal.
In line with the GHMC reorganisation, the police department has also undertaken major structural changes. The three police commissionerates — Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda — have been reorganised into a total of 12 zones, with 6 zones under Hyderabad, 3 under Cyberabad, and 3 under Rachakonda. The Hyderabad Commissionerate will now include the Charminar, Golconda, Khairatabad, Rajendranagar, Secunderabad, and Shamshabad zones, with the Shamshabad Airport also coming under its jurisdiction. In the Cyberabad Commissionerate, the Serilingampally Zone has been expanded from Moinabad to Patancheru, Madhapur has been included in the Kukatpally Zone, and a new Quthbullapur Zone has been created. The Rachakonda Commissionerate will continue with the LB Nagar, Malkajgiri, and Uppal zones. Additionally, the police department is considering the formation of a Future City Police Commissionerate by integrating the Maheshwaram Zone along with Shadnagar and Chevella areas from the Yadadri district SP jurisdiction. These comprehensive changes are expected to strengthen both urban administration and public safety across the Greater Hyderabad region.
