The Maharashtra government has announced free Marathi language classes for auto-rickshaw, taxi and app-based cab drivers. The decision comes after making basic knowledge of Marathi mandatory for public transport vehicle operators. The initiative, being implemented under the leadership of Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, aims to improve communication between drivers and passengers, promote the state’s official language and reduce difficulties faced while interacting with local commuters. Under the new policy, drivers applying for licences, renewals or permits must possess functional knowledge of Marathi.
However, following objections from driver unions, the government has decided to introduce free training programmes instead of imposing strict action immediately. Officials said the classes will cover everyday conversation, giving directions, fare-related communication and passenger interaction. The training will be conducted both offline and online with support from Marathi literary organisations. A verification drive will begin from the 1st of next month, with the initial phase focusing more on document checks rather than language tests. Authorities added that in the future, drivers who fail to comply with the rules may face penalties, including fines or cancellation of licences or permits. The policy is expected to impact nearly five lakh drivers across the state. While unions have expressed concern, the government clarified that the move is aimed solely at improving public service.
