A controversy has erupted in the United States after a MAGA supporter made inflammatory remarks about a Hindu deity’s statue located in Texas. The 90-foot bronze Hanuman statue at the Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple in Sugar Land, popularly known as the “Statue of Union,” is the tallest Hanuman statue in North America. Carlos Turcios, a MAGA supporter, shared a video of the statue on social media platform X and described it as evidence of an “immigrant invasion,” questioning why such a large statue existed in the United States and calling for action against what he termed demographic change. His comments triggered widespread backlash online.
Temple community members strongly condemned the remarks, clarifying that the statue stands on private property and was built through voluntary donations from devotees. Several social media users also criticised the comments, calling them insensitive and divisive. The controversy follows earlier remarks by Republican leader Alexander Duncan, who had questioned the presence of a Hindu statue in the region, prompting strong condemnation from the Hindu American Foundation. Community leaders emphasised that the statue represents cultural harmony and religious freedom rather than political symbolism.
