The Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, expressed serious concern over the growing number of highly educated individuals falling prey to so-called “digital arrest” scams. Speaking during a hearing in New Delhi, he described the trend as alarming and highlighted a recent case involving an elderly woman known to him who was deceived by cybercriminals and lost her retirement savings.
Taking cognizance of the issue, the Supreme Court of India has decided to hear the matter suo motu. A bench led by Justice Surya Kant announced that the case related to digital arrest frauds will be taken up for hearing on May 12, indicating the judiciary’s increasing focus on tackling cybercrime and protecting vulnerable citizens.
