A fresh low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal is likely to bring moderate to heavy rains across several districts of the state starting from the 22nd, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre. The southwest monsoon, which set in on October 16, has already triggered multiple weather systems in the region. Earlier, another low-pressure intensified into a stronger system, causing nearly a week-long spell of continuous rainfall in coastal districts.
Strong winds forced thousands of fishing boats to remain anchored, making fishing activities impossible for many days. With yet another low-pressure forming in the Bay, weather conditions are expected to change again. The system is currently moving west-northwest, leading to renewed rains in the delta and coastal districts from Sunday.
Meteorologists say the system may intensify into a depression soon. If it strengthens further, several districts across the state may receive heavy rainfall by Saturday. Meanwhile, regions in Tamil Nadu such as Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari recorded moderate rainfall on Monday morning.
Puducherry and Karaikal have been placed under an Orange Alert, with extremely heavy rainfall expected over the next 48 hours.
The department has also advised fishermen from Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts to avoid venturing into the sea during this period.
