A tragic accident occurred in the African nation of Congo, leaving the country in shock. In the Kalando mining zone of Lualaba Province, a bridge used by workers collapsed on Saturday, resulting in the death of 32 people, according to officials.
Reports say workers started running toward the narrow bridge after hearing gunfire near the mining site. The sudden rush caused the bridge to give way and collapse under the pressure, the mining agency stated. Visuals from the incident have been widely circulated on social media.
Copper mining plays a crucial role in the lives of millions in Congo. Nearly 1.5 to 2 million people depend directly on these mines for livelihood, with many more relying on them indirectly. Due to inadequate safety measures, accidents in these mining zones are unfortunately common. Several such incidents in the past have also resulted in heavy casualties.
