After its OTT release, Raja Saab faced intensified trolling, surpassing what is usually seen for films streaming on premium platforms like Disney+ Hotstar. Fans went a step further by downloading HD prints from piracy sites and circulating screenshots and clips to target director Maruthi. Social media users pointed out continuity errors, alleged use of body doubles for Prabhas, visual inconsistencies between scenes, and unrealistic sequences, turning the film into a subject of relentless post-mortem analysis.
However, the larger issue lies not in the trolling itself but in the expectations built before release. Telugu cinema has witnessed bigger disasters in the past, including Game Changer, Liger, and Acharya, which faced criticism but not this level of sustained backlash. The key difference was the excessive pre-release hype created by Maruthi and producer SKN, which inflated fan expectations beyond reach. In contrast, filmmakers like Prashanth Neel and Nag Ashwin maintained silence before Salaar and Kalki, allowing content to speak for itself. Raja Saab suffered due to the gap between hype and content, offering a clear lesson on the risks of over-promotion.
