Sonam Wangchuk Takes a Dig at Aamir Khan

An interesting twist has emerged in the ongoing controversy between Bollywood actor Aamir Khan and social activist Sonam Wangchuk. Aamir recently said that he had never met Wangchuk and that the Funsukh Wangdu character in 3 Idiots was not inspired by him. Responding to the remarks, Wangchuk said he had met Aamir at an award function in the past and that they had discussed several ideas and issues at length. Taking a sarcastic swipe at the actor, he joked that since Aamir was dressed in his Ghajini look at the time, he might have forgotten the meeting just like the character’s short-term memory loss.

The controversy stems from long-standing similarities drawn between Funsukh Wangdu in 3 Idiots and Wangchuk’s real-life work and ideas. Aamir recently said that neither he nor director Rajkumar Hirani knew about Wangchuk while the film was being written and made. Soon after, an old 2008 award-show video surfaced online showing Aamir sitting in the audience and listening to Wangchuk’s speech. Wangchuk clarified that he has never claimed that 3 Idiots was his biography, but said that conversations and ideas can influence people and may have been shared by Aamir with the film’s writers or team before being reflected in the story.
