The Bombay High Court has stepped in to prevent the online piracy of the upcoming film Ramayana: Rise of a Legend ahead of its theatrical release. The film's makers approached the court after portions of its trailer were secretly recorded and leaked online during a private screening. Expressing concerns that the movie could face similar piracy issues after its theatrical release, the producers sought urgent legal protection. Responding to their plea, the court directed internet service providers and social media platforms to block and remove unauthorised clips, audio and full copies of the film. Technology companies, including Google, have agreed to comply with the order, while those found uploading or sharing pirated content could face legal action.
The court has also issued a dynamic injunction to prevent piracy websites from bypassing the restrictions by creating new links or domains. Under this order, newly identified websites and links can also be blocked without the filmmakers having to approach the court for a fresh order every time. The protection will remain in place until mid-December, when the court is expected to review the matter. The development comes as a major relief to the filmmakers, particularly as the first part of Ramayana is reportedly being made on a budget of Rs. 2,000 crore. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Yash and Sai Pallavi, with music composed by AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer. The makers are keen to ensure that audiences watch the film in theatres rather than through illegal online sources.
