India and Israel were the only two countries to vote against a draft resolution on conventional arms control at regional and subregional levels, introduced by Pakistan and Belarus at the United Nations General Assembly's First Committee. The resolution was approved with 180 votes in favour, two against and no abstentions. India maintained that conventional arms control is a global issue and should not be addressed primarily through regional frameworks.
Explaining India's position, Anmol Sher Bedi, First Secretary at India's Permanent Mission to the UN, said that national security concerns extend beyond narrowly defined geographical boundaries. He also questioned the need for fresh deliberations on a subject that had already been discussed by UN disarmament bodies. India further objected to the proposal's emphasis on maintaining a regional balance in defence capabilities, stating that such an approach was unrealistic.
