An interesting debate is currently going on across social media. Some people argue that Janhvi Kapoor, the daughter of the legendary actress Sridevi, is only being offered glamorous roles in Telugu films. They say that in Devara Part 1, her appearance focused mostly on skin show, and if this continues, how will audiences ever get to see the best of her acting talent?
However, one important logic is being missed here. The current generation doesn’t particularly look at Janhvi for her performances mainly because, in Tollywood, when an actress stars opposite a top hero, there’s rarely any real scope to perform. That’s why someone like Rashmika Mandanna does story-oriented films where she can play characters like a girlfriend with emotional depth.
But for Janhvi Kapoor, that’s not easily possible in the South. To be fair, she has already proved her acting skills in Bollywood through films like Gunjan Saxena and Mili, which impressed critics but failed commercially. A few of her OTT releases also received negative feedback due to poor direction. So, when audiences didn’t particularly support her performance-driven Hindi films, why would Telugu producers invest big money on such projects here? The real issue lies in constantly comparing her with her mother, Sridevi. But the situations and eras are worlds apart as different as a fox and a cobra’s world, as the saying goes.
When Janhvi stars opposite top heroes like Ram Charan or Jr NTR, it’s unrealistic to expect long screen time or a performance-heavy role. Even Alia Bhatt, in RRR, was on-screen for hardly 15 minutes. Of course, that was a Rajamouli film and not every director is a Rajamouli. That’s why, for now, fans can only watch and enjoy Janhvi Kapoor’s presence rather than expect powerful performances from her in Telugu films. Maybe in the future, if a director or producer dares to cast her in a solo, concept-oriented film, that long-awaited wish might finally come true.
