Non-vegetarians rarely dislike fish, and many are willing to spend generously for delicious seafood. However, certain fish species in the world contain highly dangerous toxins that can turn fatal even with minor mistakes in cleaning or cooking. According to toxicologists and marine biology experts, some rare fish carry potent poisons like tetrodotoxin, which attack the nervous system and can cause death within minutes. The most notorious among these is the puffer fish (known as fugu in Japan). Doctors warn that its liver, eyes, and other organs accumulate tetrodotoxin, a toxin far more deadly than cyanide, with no known antidote available till date.
Symptoms appear within 20 minutes to three hours after consumption, starting with numbness in lips and tongue, followed by vomiting, headache, complete paralysis, and eventual respiratory failure leading to death. Specialists emphasize that only highly trained chefs should prepare it, as improper handling poses a severe life threat. Another dangerous fish is the Salema porgi (dream fish), while not directly lethal, eating its head causes intense hallucinations, terrifying sounds, and drug-like effects lasting days, as noted by researchers. Additionally, many colorful reef fish contain ciguatoxin, which affects the nervous system and can lead to severe illness or death. Health experts strongly advise extreme caution with unfamiliar or exotic fish understanding proper preparation, cleaning methods, and species is crucial. The safest approach, doctors recommend, is to avoid unknown fish altogether.
