Hand tremors can occur for several reasons and should not always be dismissed as a minor issue. Essential tremor is a neurological condition that causes involuntary and rhythmic shaking. It commonly affects the hands and may also involve the arms, head, voice or other parts of the body.
The tremor is often more noticeable when a person is using their hands, such as while writing, holding a cup, using a spoon or drinking tea or coffee. Stress, fatigue, anxiety, excessive caffeine and lack of sleep can worsen the symptoms. However, tremors may also be associated with conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, thyroid disorders, low blood sugar, certain medicines or other neurological problems.
Doctor’s Advice:
If the shaking is persistent, getting worse or interfering with eating, drinking, writing or everyday activities, it is advisable to consult a neurologist. Sudden tremors accompanied by weakness, difficulty speaking, facial drooping, severe headache, confusion or difficulty walking require prompt medical attention. Doctors may recommend blood tests or other evaluations based on the symptoms, medical history and examination.
