Bottle gourd juice has recently become a trending health drink, with many people consuming it on an empty stomach in the morning for perceived health benefits, according to health experts. However, Ayurvedic specialists emphasize the importance of understanding its benefits, risks and safe usage. They explain that all vegetables contain anti-nutrients that may affect nutrient absorption and digestion in the body. Bottle gourd contains a high level of oxalates and when consumed in raw juice form, these compounds can enter the body in significant amounts. Oxalates may bind with calcium and increase the risk of kidney stone formation, which may not affect everyone but can cause health issues in some individuals, they caution.
To reduce the impact of oxalates, experts recommend boiling or lightly cooking bottle gourd before preparing juice, as this helps lower anti-nutrient levels and improves the availability of vitamins and minerals. They also clarify that popular claims about detox juices are not scientifically accurate, as organs like the kidneys, liver and lymphatic system naturally detoxify the body. A healthy lifestyle, balanced diet, regular exercise and adequate sleep are sufficient for the body’s natural detoxification process. Experts further state that consuming whole fruits is more beneficial than fruit juices and caution is advised when consuming raw vegetable juices, especially on an empty stomach.
