As summer temperatures continue to rise, many people are turning to cool drinks and fruits for relief. Watermelon, in particular, is one of the most popular fruits during the season. It is highly beneficial in helping the body stay hydrated due to its high water content. However, health experts warn that if watermelon is not consumed properly, it may cause more harm than benefits. According to experts, cutting watermelon immediately after bringing it home and storing it in the refrigerator is not advisable. Once cut, the fruit may lose some of its natural nutrients and become more vulnerable to bacterial contamination. Therefore, experts recommend consuming watermelon at room temperature. If any portion is left over, it should be covered properly and consumed as soon as possible.
Since watermelon naturally contains around 92 percent water, drinking additional water immediately after eating it may negatively affect digestion. Experts say this habit can lead to indigestion, bloating, vomiting, or diarrhea. They especially advise parents to be cautious with children. It is recommended to wait at least 30 to 45 minutes after eating watermelon before drinking water. Experts also suggest avoiding excessive consumption, noting that one small bowl of pieces or two to three large slices per day is sufficient. Those who feel heaviness in the stomach may benefit from sprinkling a little black salt on the fruit, as it can aid digestion. Consumers are also advised not to buy pre-cut watermelon pieces from outside vendors and to purchase fruit only from trusted sources. If the fruit releases excess water after cutting or gives off an unusual smell, it should not be consumed.
