Mount Dukono volcano on Halmahera Island in Indonesia erupted on Friday, killing three mountain climbers, officials said. Around 20 climbers were present near the volcano during the eruption, and rescue teams managed to save 14 people. Five of the rescued climbers sustained injuries and are receiving treatment. Authorities confirmed that the victims included two Singapore citizens and one Indonesian national.
The volcanic eruption sent massive ash clouds nearly 10 kilometres into the sky. Rescue operations are still underway to locate the missing climbers. Indonesia frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic eruptions because it lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire zone. Officials have currently maintained the second-highest alert level around Mount Dukono.
