The Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada metro rail projects have reached a crucial stage, with the Centre forwarding their Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for financial appraisal. The first phase of the two projects is estimated to involve an investment of ₹21,616 crore and create a metro network spanning 84.63 km. The Visakhapatnam project will connect the Steel Plant with key parts of the city, while the Vijayawada network is planned to connect Gannavaram with the airport, residential areas and major commercial zones.
Both projects are proposed under a joint-venture model, with the state and Centre contributing 20% each and the remaining 60% expected to be mobilised through financial institutions. Several foreign banks have reportedly shown interest in providing loans. Meanwhile, a Social Impact Assessment survey has begun in Vijayawada covering Bandar Road, Eluru Road, Gannavaram and Penamaluru. Around 80 acres will be required for the two corridors, including land for stations and a coach depot. The completion of the financial appraisal and the Centre’s final decision could pave the way for the first phase of construction.
