The month of Shravan is considered an important period for religious observances, pujas and vratams. Among them, Varalakshmi Vratam holds a special place, with devotees worshipping Goddess Lakshmi and seeking prosperity, good health and the well-being of their families. Women traditionally observe the vratam with devotion, decorate the Goddess and offer special prayers and naivedyam.
Spiritual speaker Acharya Kakunuri Suryanarayana Murthy says that Varalakshmi Vratam can be performed by anyone. According to him, those who wish to observe the vratam may do so under the guidance of a priest. Even if the family has no previous tradition of performing the vratam, devotees can begin the practice after learning the proper procedure from those who regularly observe it. Once started, it is advisable to continue the practice according to one’s circumstances and tradition.
Regarding the ritual, the kalasham holds an important place. According to the traditional procedure explained by the spiritual scholar, a kalash filled with water should be placed on a prepared altar, decorated with mango leaves and a coconut, and Goddess Varalakshmi should be invoked and worshipped. Some devotees also use images or metal idols of Goddess Lakshmi according to their tradition and convenience. These additional practices may be followed according to personal faith and circumstances.
The form of Goddess Lakshmi used for worship is another common question. The speaker says that a standing image can be used, as Goddess Lakshmi is traditionally described as appearing before Charumathi Devi in a standing form. At the same time, devotees may also worship a seated image. A picture showing Goddess Lakshmi seated on a lotus is considered suitable according to the tradition mentioned.
If devotees are unable to perform the vratam on the usual Friday during Shravan, it need not necessarily be discontinued. According to the explanation given by the spiritual speaker, the vratam can be performed on another Friday during the Shukla Paksha of Shravan, depending on the relevant traditional calendar. If that is also not possible, an alternative observance may be followed during Navaratri with Lakshmi Alankaram. If an unexpected difficulty arises after preparations are complete, another woman in the family can complete the ritual. If no one is available, the vratam can be performed through a priest, according to the tradition.
