Kashyapa Maharshi Jayanti 2026: Birth, Lineage, Kashmir Connection and Spiritual Significance

Kashyapa Maharshi has a prominent place in Hindu Puranas and traditional spiritual literature. He is regarded as one of the Saptarishis and an important Prajapati associated with the expansion of creation. According to traditional accounts, Kashyapa was born to Sage Marichi, the son of Lord Brahma, and Kala, the daughter of Kardama Prajapati. Traditional interpretations also associate his name with the Sanskrit word for tortoise or Kurma.

Kashyapa Maharshi’s marriages and lineage are among the most significant parts of his story. Puranic accounts state that he married several daughters of Daksha Prajapati, including Aditi, Diti, Vinata and Kadru. Aditi is associated with the birth of the Devas and the Adityas, while Diti is associated with the Daityas. Vinata is traditionally described as the mother of Garuda and Aruna, while Kadru is associated with the origin of the Nagas.

His lineage is said to extend to numerous birds, animals, aquatic creatures, celestial beings and other forms of life. Different Puranic texts describe various species and mythical beings as descendants of Kashyapa through his different wives. Because of this extensive lineage, Kashyapa is remembered as a Prajapati closely connected with traditional accounts of the expansion of creation.

The Kashyapa Gotra among Hindu communities is traditionally associated with this Maharshi. There is also a popular traditional account connecting Kashyapa with Kashmir. According to this belief, Kashyapa lived in the region for a long period, and the name associated with him is traditionally linked with the origin of the name Kashmir.

Kashyapa Maharshi also holds an important position in the Vaikhanasa tradition of temple worship. Traditional Vaikhanasa literature discusses subjects such as selection of temple sites, foundation rituals, temple construction, idol consecration and worship procedures. The Vaikhanasa tradition continues to have an important role in several temples, including the worship tradition followed at Tirumala.

Kashyapa Jayanti is traditionally observed on Shravana Shukla Chaturthi when Hasta Nakshatra coincides with the occasion. In 2026, the occasion falls on August 16. Devotees remember Kashyapa Maharshi on this day and offer prayers. Traditional beliefs also associate remembering his lineage with family prosperity and progeny.
