India is preparing to take its indigenous semi-high-speed Vande Bharat trains to international markets, marking a significant step in the country’s railway sector. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that India aims to begin exporting Vande Bharat trainsets within the next three to four years. The announcement comes amid the expansion of Vande Bharat services on key routes and plans to introduce advanced sleeper versions. The move is expected to showcase India’s growing capabilities in railway manufacturing and technology on the global stage.
Over the past few years, Vande Bharat trains have gained popularity among passengers for their modern design and onboard facilities. The government now aims to expand their reach beyond domestic operations by focusing on international standards, advanced technology and passenger safety. Investments in railway infrastructure and policies promoting indigenous manufacturing are also supporting this ambition. If exports begin as planned, India could strengthen its position as a manufacturer and supplier of modern railway technology, while creating new opportunities in international markets and global supply chains.
