United States authorities have identified nearly 10,000 foreign students for allegedly misusing the Optional Practical Training (OPT) provision linked to student visas. The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) stated that some Indian students are also among those under investigation. Since Donald Trump returned to power, the US administration has tightened immigration and student visa regulations. The Department of Homeland Security has launched a detailed investigation and warned that legal action will be taken against those found violating the rules.
ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons stated that the OPT program was originally designed to support international students but is now allegedly being misused in activities involving fraud, espionage, and other unlawful acts. US authorities are reviewing whether the current OPT framework aligns with national security and tax regulations. Under the OPT system, international students on F-1 visas, particularly in STEM courses, can work in the US after completing their studies. However, American officials allege that some students from India and other countries are exploiting the program to secure long-term employment opportunities, including H-1B visas.
