UNESCO has raised serious objections to the conservation work undertaken by the government at Taxila, a renowned ancient archaeological site in Pakistan. The organization warned that the ongoing work is damaging the authenticity and historical value of the structures listed as a World Heritage Site. UNESCO reportedly cautioned Pakistani authorities that failure to halt the work immediately could lead to Taxila being placed on the “World Heritage in Danger” list or even losing its heritage status.
In March this year, a visitor sent photographs and details of the ongoing work to the Pakistan Permanent Mission to UNESCO. The complaint highlighted that original stone walls were being removed and replaced with new constructions, while the height of old walls was being altered. These actions, the visitor argued, undermine the historical integrity of the site and violate established conservation norms.
