Students Assaulted While Returning from Coaching in Jamui

A disturbing incident involving two Class 10 students in Bihar’s Jamui has triggered a political debate over the safety of women and children in the state. The incident took place on September 19, when the teenage boy and girl were returning after coaching classes. A group of people allegedly intercepted and assaulted the boy and harassed the minor girl. Police registered a case under the POCSO Act and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT). Three people were initially arrested, while other suspects were being traced. As of September 22, police said the number of arrests had risen to five, with the main accused, Nandan Yadav, being injured in a police encounter and taken into custody.

The incident has also intensified the political debate over law and order in Bihar. Opposition leaders, including Tejashwi Yadav and Rahul Gandhi, have questioned the government over women’s and girls’ safety and demanded action against those responsible. The episode has also brought earlier comments by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, made when he was deputy chief minister, back into the political discussion. The investigation remains underway, with police working to trace the remaining suspects. Authorities have also urged people not to circulate videos that could reveal the identities of the minor victims.
