Revanth Reddy Proposes Lowering Election Contest Age to 21

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has proposed a constitutional amendment to reduce the minimum age for contesting Assembly and Lok Sabha elections from 25 years to 21 years. Addressing the national media in Hyderabad, he introduced the slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Yuva” and emphasized that young people should play a greater role in shaping India's future. He pointed out that youth already serve as IAS and IPS officers, lead global organizations, and hold positions in local bodies, making them equally capable of representing people in legislatures.

The Chief Minister also urged the Centre to review issues related to national-level examinations such as CBSE, NEET, and NET while extending support to affected students and families. He announced that the Telangana Assembly and Legislative Council would hold a joint discussion on the proposal in August. After consulting all political parties, the state plans to pass an official resolution seeking a reduction in the minimum contesting age and forward it to the Central Government. He also requested the Centre to consider the proposal alongside delimitation, increased parliamentary seats, and women's reservation.
