Congress leader Rahul Gandhi narrowly escaped injury after several vehicles in his convoy collided on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh. According to reports, five vehicles travelling at the rear of the convoy and an ambulance crashed into one another, leaving several party workers and security personnel with minor injuries. Rahul Gandhi, who was travelling in a separate vehicle, was unharmed. He had arrived at Lucknow airport on Monday morning and was travelling by road to Sultanpur to appear before a special court in connection with a defamation case. Local media reports suggested that the collision occurred after one vehicle suddenly applied the brakes while the convoy was moving at speed. Officials described the incident as minor and said Gandhi resumed his journey afterwards.
In a separate development, Rahul Gandhi received relief in the defamation case, with the special court in Sultanpur reportedly dismissing the complaint against him. The case stemmed from remarks he made during the 2018 Karnataka Assembly election campaign about Amit Shah, who was then the BJP president and is now a Union minister. Gandhi had referred to the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case while criticising Shah. A BJP leader from Sultanpur, Vijay Mishra, subsequently filed a complaint alleging that the remarks were defamatory. Gandhi travelled to Uttar Pradesh to attend the court proceedings. According to the supplied report, the court dismissed the case after hearing the matter.
